Why Matheus Cunha Would Be a Perfect Fit for Ruben Amorim’s Manchester United

Why Matheus Cunha Would Be a Perfect Fit for Ruben Amorim’s Manchester United

It has been well documented and debated but Ruben Amorim’s tactical philosophy revolves around a 3-4-3 or a variation of it, often deploying two attacking midfielders behind a central striker. This system thrives on fluid movement, pressing, and technical qualities that Matheus Cunha possesses in abundance.

A player known for his versatility, dribbling, and defensive work rate, Cunha could be an ideal signing to fit into Amorim’s attacking framework. Let’s take a look at his key attributes and how he would suit Manchester United.

Versatility and Tactical Adaptability

Cunha’s ability to play across multiple attacking roles makes him a valuable asset for Amorim. He has operated as a centre-forward, second striker, left winger, and attacking midfielder, excelling when given freedom to drift between lines.

In Amorim’s preferred system, Cunha would likely thrive as one of the two No. 10s behind the striker. His close control, ability to turn under pressure, and progressive dribbling would allow him to link midfield with attack effectively. Rather than being restricted to a wide role or traditional striker duties, he could move into pockets of space, combine with teammates, and create chances.

His role would be similar to how Amorim has used players like Pedro Goncalves at Sporting, players who aren’t rigid in positioning but can exploit spaces with intelligent movement and technical quality.

Physicality and Defensive Work Rate

Manchester United have often lacked intensity in their pressing, something Amorim’s system demands from his attacking players. Cunha is one of the most defensively active forwards in the Premier League, averaging nearly two tackles and interceptions per game.

His pressing ability would be crucial in Amorim’s high-energy style, where attacking players are expected to win the ball back quickly. He has the stamina and tenacity to close down defenders, disrupt passing lanes, and force turnovers, traits that align perfectly with Amorim’s philosophy.

While he isn’t the strongest in physical duels, he compensates by using his body intelligently, shielding the ball well and applying pressure effectively. His defensive work rate would allow United to press higher and regain possession quickly, a key feature of Amorim’s tactical blueprint.

Ball-Carrying and Creativity

One of Cunha’s standout attributes is his dribbling and ball-carrying ability. He is comfortable taking players on in one-on-one situations and excels at progressing the ball over long distances.

In Amorim’s system, where quick transitions and fluid attacking movements are key, Cunha’s ability to drive forward with the ball would be invaluable. His agility and quick feet make him unpredictable, allowing him to break defensive lines and create space for his teammates. Manchester United are much too reliant on the creativity of Bruno Fernandes and the team lacks ‘No 10’ profiles Amorim likes to have in his teams.

As one of the two No. 10s in the current United side, Cunha would have the freedom to drop deep, receive the ball under pressure, and advance play. His ability to combine with wing-backs, midfielders, and the central striker would add a new dimension to United’s attack.

Goal Threat and Finishing Variety

While not an out-and-out striker, Cunha has developed an impressive range of finishing techniques. He often outperforms his expected goals (xG), demonstrating his ability to score from various situations. As of 1st March 2025, Cunha has 15 goals and 4 assists in all competitions this season (0.54 goals per 90) according to FootyStats.

Under Amorim, United’s attacking midfielders would be expected to contribute goals regularly. Cunha’s instinctive finishing, whether through precise placement or powerful strikes, would add a much-needed goal threat from deeper positions.

His experience playing in transition-heavy systems at Wolves also bodes well for United’s counter-attacking potential. Amorim’s teams are known for their ability to strike quickly when winning possession, and Cunha’s composure in fast-paced situations would suit this approach perfectly.

Potential Concerns & Weaknesses

Despite his strengths, Cunha does have areas to improve. He can be inconsistent in possession, occasionally making careless passes or becoming frustrated when things don’t go his way. The forward has also received two red cards this season, both for violent conduct of which on one of those occasions (home to Ipswich in December 2024) he received a two game ban and an £80,000 fine. Cunha plays with aggression but his unpredictably in being unable to control his temperament can at times be to the detriment of the team.

Cunha’s back-to-goal play could also improve, as he sometimes struggles against physically dominant defenders. The Premier League is becoming more and more physical every year and the physical flooring of this Manchester United side must improve. Amorim is already well aware of this.

With Amorim’s structured approach, Cunha’s weaknesses could be minimised. The Portuguese coach’s tactical discipline and ability to refine players roles could help Cunha become more efficient in possession and in his decision-making.

Conclusion

Matheus Cunha would be a fantastic addition to Ruben Amorim’s Manchester United, particularly as one of the two attacking midfielders (No 10s) in his system. His dribbling, creativity, defensive work rate, and versatility make him an ideal fit for the intense, structured style that Amorim wants to implement at Old Trafford.

With his ability to press, progress the ball, and contribute to both goals and in being creative in the final third, Cunha could play a pivotal role in revitalising United’s attack. If the club is looking for a forward who embodies both technical quality and defensive intensity, Cunha is a fit.

Just last month, Cunha signed a new four-and-a-half-year contract with Wolves committing him to the club until June 2029. The deal however includes a release clause of £62 million and the fact his profile unquestionably improves Amorim’s side, Cunha might just be high on United’s list of transfer targets this summer.
